What is amnesia and what forms of amnesia exist? - Chapter 7
Amnesia or memory loss is the collective name for memory disorders. Amnesia refers to forgetfulness that goes so far that it influences (the functioning in) daily life. Studies with amnesia patients show that a properly functioning memory is crucial for the ability to function normally as a human being in society.
Amnesia can be divided into two groups:
Organic amnesia: this is caused by physical damage to the brain. This type of amnesia is often severe, limiting and irreversible.
Psychogenic amnesia: this is caused by psychological factors and often involves the displacement of painful memories that are unacceptable to the patient. This type of amnesia is not completely limiting and is reversible.
