How can the ability to use language be affected? - Chapter 11
For normal people, the production of language is effortless. This chapter will, however, discuss ways in which the ability to use language can be affected. The main focus is on patterns that emerge in patients with aphasia, a language deficiency due to brain injury.
There are two ways in which human brain function can be disturbed, namely through acquired damage or through developmental disorders. In the case of acquired damage, a lesion is performed on a healthy brain, for example, when there is a stroke, tumor, trauma or a progressive disease. A developmental disorder is, for example, autism.
Broca's aphasia is a disorder in speech production. Wernicke's aphasia is a disorder that has to do with understanding speech. There may also be disturbed speech in the sense that their speech is difficult to understand. It can consist of random words, a so-called 'word salad' or it can consist of made-up words. These last words are also called neologisms or non-words.
