What is psychological conversation? - Chapter 1
What are the conditions for a successful psychological conversation?
Helping people with personal problems is not easy. Sometimes a person cannot be helped or the help is not appreciated. However, people with problems can often be helped. But how can you best help people?
First of all, it is necessary to obtain a clear picture of the important role that conversations play in providing assistance. What does the counselor have in mind? What do they want to achieve and why? What are the main views about human functioning?
Secondly, the counselor's skills with regard to interviewing are important. The better these skills are, the better someone can be helped.
Insight into the above background means that the care provider's behavior and their influence on the person asking for help becomes clear, so that the care provider can choose their own views and possibly change them. This is especially interesting for professional social workers in training. However, there are other people who could also benefit from it, such as teachers, study counselors, etc.
If conversations between care providers and clients "make sense", then the people with problems must be able to reason. Conditions for successful conversations when providing assistance are accountability, solution-focused approach and trust between the dependent and the psychologist.
